Mets 7, Cardinals 2

The Mets (56-47) defeated the Cardinals (57-48) tonight by a score of 7-2.  The game, coupled with a Phillies loss, puts the Mets 2 games ahead of the Phillies and Marlins, who are tied for second.  Pelfrey looked great again as he won his seventh game in his last eight starts.  He pitched 7 innings, giving the Mets a 5th straight game in which the starter has gone at least 7.  This is the longest such stretch since 2001.  He allowed only one run, while striking out 5.

Carlos Delgado hit his 20th home run of the season, making this his 13th consecutive season with 20+ home runs.  Argenis Reyes hit his first career home run in the seventh and proceeded to receive the silent treatment on the bench until buddy Jose broke the ice.  Always fun to see that.

The bottom of the 9th turned into deja vu all over again back to Tuesday.  Once again, Duaner Sanchez could not get a man out in the 9th.  Pedro Feliciano came in for one infield fly out.  Aaron Heilman came in, and after an epic at-bat from Ryan Ludwick, got the final two outs.

Tomorrow’s game is at 7:10 PM.  Probable pitchers are Brandon Knight, a call-up, for the Mets and Joel Pineiro (3-4, 4.52) for the Cardinals.
